GINKGO 6" x 6" stencil

One of my older stencils, Ginkgo, remains a favorite.  Recently I made a new print with this 6" x 6" stencil ...

... using a sponge brayer loaded with heavy body orange-yellow and pale magenta acrylic paints.

My substrate was an old sheet of foreign newsprint that had already been used for a couple of paint experiments.

Now I plan to use this color combination more often!

Artist Mary Ann Russo with 6" x 6" stencils WEBBED MEDALLION and TIGER LILY

My friend Mary Ann Russo has created gorgeous stained- glass-window artworks using my 6" x 6" stencils Tiger Lily and Webbed Medallion.

Mary Ann's method was to start with watercolor geometric shapes on watercolor paper.  Next, she used a brayer to roll black acrylic paint over the stencils.  While the paint was still wet, she flipped the stencils over and pressed them to the watercolor paper -- using the stencils like rubber stamps.

Since some of the lines didn't imprint fully, Mary Ann filled in a few gaps with a black marker.

She cut one of the papers into a stained glass window shape and added a dark paper frame.

More Art by Kyriakos Pachadiroglou

Artist Kyriakos Pachadiroglou has notified me of another artwork of his using one of my Mimosa stencils (which comes in two sizes -- 9" x 12" and 6" x 6".)  This new, three-dimensional art is a beautiful encouragement for us all to grow and bloom!

Thank you, Kyriakos, for allowing me to share your artwork here!

ORNAMENTAL IRON CURLS Stencil in Multiple Roles

Ornamental Iron Curls is a 6" x 6" stencil that gets used often in my house!

The first two artworks below were made following techniques given in the Absentee Artist chapter of Creative Paper Art, a book by Nancy Welch.  The same technique is demonstrated in Pat Dews' DVD Designing Great Starts with Texture and Form --

Below are two Ornamental Iron Curls stencils, side by side, that have become stained after having been used in another art project ...

The stencils above were later cut up and used as collage elements.  Photos of that work will be posted here later.

Below is a print made with Ornamental Iron Curls and my 9" x 12" stencil Prayer Flags...

These two stencils look like this:

Another Fun Way to Use Prints made with Stencils

I created today's project with free-hand cut-outs, but if you want, you can trace shapes using the 9" x 12" stencil Kunst Puppen Set A, by Andrew Borloz --

-- to make "paper doll collages" cut from a stash of stencil-printed papers:

The hat on the left figure is cut from a print made with Ornamental Iron Curls (6" x 6").  Her lavender blouse comes from a print created with Pavilion Shadows (6" x 6".)  Her skirt is cut from a print made with 9" x 12" Mimosa Stencil.

The middle figure wears a hat and blouse cut from two prints made using my 6" x 6" stencil Medallion.   Ornamental Iron Curls (6" x 6") made the print that was used to form her skirt.

On the far right, the figure head and hat were cut from a print made with Kaleid (6" x 6") stencil.  Her blouse was cut from a print made with two 9" x 12" stencils -- Facets and Mimosa StencilHer skirt came from a print created with Mimosa Stencil (9" x 12") and Sprigs (6" x 6".)

I encourage anyone with a pile of stencil-printed papers to give this a try -- it's fun!

Quick and Easy Valentine Card Envelope

Today I pulled out two scrap-leftovers cut from prints I'd made with 6"x 6" stencils Ornamental Irons Curls (below left) and Kaleid (below right.)

My Valentines are already made -- but I needed an envelope for one of the 6"x 6" Valentine cards.

I cut heart shapes from each of the scraps and used a gluestick to embellish the envelope with them.  Then I added calligraphy.

I drew my hearts freehand, but if you would rather use a stencil to trace a heart shape for cutting, a fine selection is shown here.

More Unique Valentines

One more time, I'm using my 6" x 6" stencil Quilted Flower Garden to make a Valentine...

Again I've chosen textured gold foil paper, this time using a free-hand cut heart-shape as a pattern.  I placed the pattern on the back-side of the textured gold paper, traced it with a pencil, and cut it out with fine-detail scissors from Fiskars.

Quilted Flower Garden (used to create the background paper above) looks like this in its entirety --

Today's second Valentine --

-- stars a print made with yet another non-traditional-Valentine design:  Swaying Grasses (6" x 6".)

Among the grasses is a red mini-heart created with one of the paper-crafting  shape-punches by Marvy.

The background is a hand-painted silver heart, glued to a 5" x 7" greeting card blank made by Strathmore; this one is the watercolor card, which is cut from sturdy 140-lb. paper.

The stencil Swaying Grasses in its entirety looks like this --
