Above: Having started life plain white, this paper giftbag now sports an embellishment to highlight a message to its recipient. Its orange-and-yellow background was printed with 9" x12" L753 Looking Up Through Trees Large. For the foreground-message, I used 6" x 6" LOVE s828 with red-orange acrylic paint. (In the far, far background rests another image ... in shades of gray ... It was probably once a stencil print too but its origin is lost to memory!)
After cutting apart sections that make up my 9" x 12" mask It's a Jungle Out There L451, I placed them into water-diluted acrylic paints that I'd pooled on the face of a stretched canvas. Before the water-thinned paints fully dried, I lifted off the stencil pieces, leaving behind the design above. I have not tried using watercolors or acrylic inks for this technique but I'm guessing results would be similar, except that watercolor might yield less saturated colors. Nothing wrong with that! Variety is the spice of life! One warning: Don't allow the liquid medium to dry, or your stencil might stick to the surface when you try lifting it.
