Re-visiting ATC MIXUP SWATTON #1 and ATC MIXUP SWATTON #2 -- 2 9" x 12" Sheets of Stencils and Masks

This year saw the release of my two 9" x 12" sheets of ATC-sized stencils and masks.  Not long ago I was reminded that I had yet to post all my art samples created with ATC Mixup Swatton #1 and ATC Mixup Swatton #2 --

ATC Mixup Swatton #1

ATC Mixup Swatton #2

-- and that reminder came my way via artist Carolyn McGowan, when I saw this artwork of hers:

You can click on the art above (a collection of Artist Trading Cards) to enlarge it and better see details.  In the top row, Carolyn has used Unfurling Leaves (top row far right) as well as  one of the cats (top row middle) from ATC Mixup Swatton #1 .
She has filled the middle row using more of the cat stencils and she's cleverly filled the cat in center with an imprint made with Diagonal Mania, also from ATC Mixup Swatton #1.  In the bottom row, the central image my ATC-sized stencil Ski Lift Works fills the head silhouette.

Carolyn's center cat in the second row was created by first imprinting ATC-sized paper with blue paint and Diagonal Mania; her next step was to place the cat mask atop that blue-and-white print, then paint around it with a layer of translucent yellow paint.  And she outlined the cat shape in black ink, making it stand out from its background.  Carolyn has used this approach working with several other stencils and masks as she developed a number of the ATCs above.

Spurred on by the reminder Carolyn had given me, I pulled out more art samples I'd created using ATC Mixup Swatton #2 --

Above:  I started with a sheet of watercolor paper previously tinted with water-diluted purple acrylic paint mixed with a little foamed-up dish detergent.  I placed my ATC-sized mask Sprigs from ATC Mixup Swatton #2 atop the paper and spread a layer of light modeling paste over it.  After that paste had dried, I went over the surface with Pan Pastel chalks of blue and lavender.

Above:  Again I started with a piece of watercolor paper previously stained with water-diluted acrylic paints.  Atop that I placed my ATC-sized stencil Penguin from ATC Mixup Swatton #2.  Using a sponge brayer loaded with heavy-body lavender acrylic paint, I spread an even layer of color across the stencil.  Below are two photos of the same paint-application method used in other projects--

Above:  the heavy-body paint is being absorbed into a sponge brayer.

Above:  the paint-loaded brayer is rolled down across the stencil or mask; this approach creates an even layer of paint all in one easy motion.

Showcasing Yet 3 More Artists using My Stencils

Artist and StencilGirl Mary Beth Shaw has used a boatload of StencilGirl stencils and masks in creating this gorgeous 2-page art journal spread --

-- and you may want to click on the above photo to better see details.  I'm over the moon with the way Mary Beth has used my 6" x 6" stencil Pressed Leaves with black paint in the lower far left and upper far right!  I'm always reluctant to use pure black, but here Mary Beth has shown how to do it with style!

6" x 6" stencil Pressed Leaves

Artist Tracy Krueger has done something fantastic with my 9" x 12" Nosegay stencil!  Check out her photos below and notice how she has used the stencil to enhance the panels that radiate from the center of the umbrella -- I love that!

Tracy's decorated umbrella top is -- a stroke of genius -- secured into a rustic frame for wall display.

A close-up of one area showing -- in the upper and middle right -- the bright lavender print Tracy made with Nosegay stencil.

Nosegay itself looks like this --

Another umbrella was decorated by today's third highlighted artist who has put stencils to work as art-making tools -- Susan Brown.  Susan has made magic with my 6" x 6" Mimosa stencil and a heart-stopping combination of blues and greens:

Mimosa comes in the 6" x 6" size that Susan Brown has put to such beautiful use; it also comes in a 9" x 12" size --

3 More Artists using my StencilGirl Stencils and Masks

Artist Jen Cameron has delighted me in saying that 9" x 12" Thistle is her favorite stencil!

And more delight was in store at the sight of the umbrella that she decorated using this stencil as her last step.  It really is beautiful!

Check out Jen's step-by-step photos and directions here.

My Thistles series comes in 3 sizes -- 9" x 12" (the size Jen used) and 6" x 6" and ATC-sized.

Another of my 9" x 12" stencils was used by UK artist Frieda Oxenham, and her results are equally stunning:

Freida created the above eye-catching art with my 9" x 12" mask Looking Up Through Trees --

Last but far from least, artist Mary Bucek has used my 9' x 12" mask Clustered Leaves in two art projects shown below:

Clustered Leaves itself looks like this--

My sincere thanks goes to Mary Bucek, Frieda Oxenham and Jen Cameron for graciously allowing me to re-post their art here!

And my thank-you goes to you too, for having stopped here today.  To scroll thru the pages of my StencilGirl stencils and masks, please start here.

Nancy Sanderson Curry and HOT AIR BALLOONS Stencil

Nancy Sanderson Curry -- one of my very special favorite artists -- has delighted me by sharing this artwork of hers; you will need to click on it to enlarge it since, for some reason, I can't re-size it to the size I normally use here.
And Nancy has graciously given me permission to show a clip of a how-to video she made.  It shows her using a black Stabilo water-soluble pencil to heighten contrast on paper that started life as a Citrasolv print:

https://www.facebook.com/nancycurry/videos/10158014794428672/

Below is another gorgeous piece by Nancy; this one is also done on a Citrasolv background--

In creating the above 2 artworks, Nancy used the stencil from my 4" x 4" Hot Air Balloon Mini stencil and mask set, which looks like this:

Hot Air Balloons are available in two other sizes -- 6" x 6" and ATC-sized, as part of ATC Mixup Swatton # 1.

Be sure to check out Nancy's website here!

Below, I'm showing another artwork, this one of my own creation --

I used the same stencil-and-mask set that Nancy had, but I chose the mask that comes with the stencil.  My background was a page from an old picture calendar.  I placed the mask on the paper and, with a sponge brayer loaded with heavy-body aqua acrylic paint, coated the entire sheet with paint.  After lifting off the mask and letting the paint dry, I cut out the print with Fiskars Paper Edgers Scissors, mounted it onto a double layer of paper, and added it to the cover of a blank greeting card.  In the upper right, I embellished the card with a wooden heart that I had previously covered with stencil-printed paper.

Many thanks to Nancy Sanderson Curry for her generosity, and many thanks to you for coming to see my blog today!  To scroll thru the pages of my StencilGirl stencils and masks, please start here.

Katie Smith and FERNS 6 Stencil

Today's post focuses on innovative artist Kathie Smith, who used Ferns 6 to decorate a piece of sliced wood from Walnut Hollow, thus embarking on brand-new creative territory!

Katie shows how much fun it is to find ever more ways to use stencils and masks.
You can get full step-by-step directions behind these photos by clicking on Kathie Smith's blog.

For this project, Kathie used my 6" x 6" Ferns 6 stencil, which looks like this:

You can also keep up with Katie Smith on Facebook.

Wendy Baysa's Art with MIKKI'S FLOWERS (6" x 6") and GARDEN MONTAGE (9" x 12")

Wendy Baysa has been playing with 6" x 6" Mikki's Flowers Stencil, 6" x 6" Mikki's Flowers Mask and the mask Garden Montage (9" x 12") -- with wonderful results!  Her color blends make for gorgeous eye candy!

Garden Montage (9" x 12")

6" x 6" Mikki's Flowers Stencil, 6" x 6" Mikki's Flowers Mask

After making the last print above, Wendy cut and folded the paper to make a greeting card --

My mask Garden Montage (9" x 12") has been put to work by my own hands, too, numerous times....

Above:  Part of this mask was used to make a print on a sheet of foreign newsprint.

Below, I spread a base coat of light-magenta acrylic paint; after that dried, I placed Garden Montage atop it and went over the mask with a sponge brayer loaded with heavy-body aqua acrylic paint.

Above:  My first step was to play the mask onto a white substrate and spray over it several times with aqua and green spray paints.  After both the sprays and the mask had dried, I glued the mask itself atop the substrate with heavy matte medium gel.

Black and White Prints with PALM FRONDS SILHOUETTE and Friends

Today's post focuses on black-and-white prints made when I was taking one of the online classes of Jane Davies.

For today's art samples, I started with white paper and used the sponge brayer method that's so quick and easy for me.

I had no black papers on hand, so I created some with black gesso.  I wanted some black backgrounds so I could print thru my stencils and masks with Titanium White heavy body acrylic paint.

I left some papers white so I would have white backgrounds for prints made with black gesso.

Above:  A group photo of most of the prints.  A few more are included in the close-ups below.

Options abound with these black-and-whites.

One option will be to cover them with translucent acrylic paints to fill the white areas with rainbows of color.  The black areas will appear different, too, once they've been coated with translucent color.

Another idea is to use them as black-and-whites in collage.  I've already put together a few of those --

Above:  This collage was created on 120-lb. white watercolor paper.  The central image is a print made with 6" x 6" Palm Fronds Silhouette Small.

Above: 6" x 6" Palm Fronds Silhouette Small made the print at the upper right as well as the piece-of-a-print in the central area under the focal point.  The focal point itself is a print made with my 9" x 12" mask Blooming Where Planted.  In the upper left is a partial print created using my 6" x 6" mask Sassy Spray.  The lined pieces in the central and lower right areas were cut from my original drawing that became the basis for my 9" x 12" mask Loopy Ladders.
